Acidosis - Is your body too acidic?

To function at optimal levels, we need to have certain bodily functions fall between certain ranges.

Our body temperature for example needs to be approximately 36.6 degrees Celsius. If it drops below this level you will feel quite off colour, additionally if it is raised you will also feel less than ordinary. In fact 3 – 4 degrees higher could result in convulsions and even death.

PH levels in our bodies are equally as important.  Every liquid has a pH value which falls into a scale between 0 and 14.  To give you some insight as to pH levels, pure water sits on the scale at 7 pH.  Very acidic liquids such as battery acid is on the lower end of the scale at around 1pH and household ammonia on the upper end of the scale and is just under 12 pH.

As our bodies are 60% fluid (without taking blood into consideration), we also have a pH level.  It can be hard to imagine that our bodies can contain so much fluid, however when you consider that every cell contains fluid as well as the space between cells it starts to become easier to understand.   Our bodies function at optimal levels when our pH is closer to neutral (ranging from 7.0 and 7.4), that means neither acidic nor alkaline. 

Acid in the stomach and colon is an entirely different system.  If the fluid in our bodies (with exception to blood and stomach acids) are acidic, they irritate our system and then we can have quite a situation on our hands.

In our natural condition the body holds reserves of alkaline in case of emergencies, such as illness.  Unfortunately that supply is called upon day after day to help neutralize the acidic environment and this then leaves little in reserve which in turn leaves the body is a weak state.

What causes our systems to become acidic?

The body can handle certain acidities that are caused naturally by the production of cells and energy.  This is where the reserves should come into play. The problem is exacerbated when we consume a highly acidic diet.

It is necessary to take more notice of what we are putting into our bodies. Foods such as:

  • Tea and Coffee
  • Aspartame (a sugar substitute marketed as NutraSweet)
  • Cigarettes and Alcohol
  • Poisons
  • Pollutants
  • White bread, white pasta, white flour
  • Excess sugar
  • Take away food
  • Fried and processed food

Just to name a few.

In fact certain diseases are thought to be caused by an acidic system (acidosis) such as cancers, arthritis and osteoporosis.  

Acidosis (a condition rather than a disease) provides the perfect environment for diseases, viruses and bacteria to flourish, causing all sorts of different symptoms such as fatigue, pains and illness on a regular basis.  It is also widely believed by many practitioners that we are slowly killing ourselves by having an acidic system.  

How do you know if you suffer from Acidosis?

You can suffer a variety of symptoms listed below:

  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Confusion
  • Muscle seizures and weakness
  • Diarrhea
  • Shortness of breath
  • Coughing
  • Increased heart rate
  • Nausea and vomiting

A warning sign of a system that is too acidic is the presence of calcium deposits.  Minerals such as calcium, potassium, sodium and magnesium is forcefully borrowed from the vital organs, teeth and bones in order to bring the pH levels back to a more normal level, and to help remove the acidity from the body.

This can result in:

  • Cardiovascular damage
  • Weight gain
  • Diabetes
  • Conditions of the bladder and kidneys including kidney stores
  • Increased free radical invasions
  • Premature aging
  • Osteoporosis and Gout
  • Joint pain
  • Aching muscles
  • Lack of energy and chronic fatigue

It understandable that we would feel rather ordinary as this condition weakens the body so much and unfortunately is such a common condition in today’s society. Thankfully we can change the situation.

The human body is a wonderful piece of machinery and very forgiving. We can abuse our bodies for many years and once we stop, the body will begin cleansing itself immediately to hopefully reach optimal performance once more.  It is also a wonder in itself how it continues to operate so efficiently while it has nothing but rubbish to work with.

What can you do to help change your body’s pH levels?

To find out if your pH levels are at a dangerous level requires a pH test of the urine or saliva.

Your body is only able to assimilate the vital nutrients and minerals needed when your pH levels are in perfect balance. You may be eating healthy foods however your body will not be able to absorb the goodness.

By changing your diet and eating the right healthy foods, exercising and decreasing the amount of chemicals you put into your body is a great start to reducing the toxicity levels.  Reading the labels on foods in our supermarket is horrifying as they are loaded with all sorts of chemical additions. Try to limit the amount of packaged food you consume.

It is suggested drinking a couple of teaspoons of honey dissolved in milk is one avenue to decrease the acidity in your body.  Drinking water and eating foods that have high water content such as fruits and vegetable will also assist, as is the consumption of garlic.
